DSA Application Instructions

Phase 1: Interview / Audition

All shortlisted candidates are required to attend an in-person interview / audition.  Please refer to Key Dates for the date and time. 

Applied Learning Programme (Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship) 

  • Applicants who apply for DSA in Westwood’s Applied Learning Programme (Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship) will undergo an in-person interview held in Westwood Secondary School.
  • Applicants will need to need to be present for the interview. The school will only consider re-scheduling the in-person interview for applicants who are unwell (e.g. tested COVID-19 positive).

    • Shortlisted students, based on portfolio submitted, will be invited for an in-person interview where the panel will ask questions on the following:
      • Innovation/(Social) entrepreneurship experiences (which may include related competitions)
      • Interest in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), including sustainability issues
      • Background in coding/programming 
      • Leadership positions held in school

Learning for Life Programme (Arts for Life!)

  • Applications who apply for DSA in Westwood’s Learning for Life Programme (Arts for Life!) will have to go through audition in the specific art form via in-person audition held in Westwood Secondary School.
  • Applicants will need to be present for the audition. The school will only consider re-scheduling the in-person audition for applicants who are unwell (e.g. tested COVID-19 positive).

    • Concert Band
      • Candidates to email the following to the Teacher-in-charge (ng_puay_san_christina@moe.edu.sg) at least 3 days in advance.
        • the instrument that candidate is playing
        • the piece that candidate will be playing
      • Candidates to prepare one music piece of their choice for the audition.
      • Candidates may be asked to play only part of the prepared piece during the audition. [They must provide a copy of the music score at least 3 days in advance via email to the Teacher-in-charge.]
      • Sight-reading exercises will be administered.
      • Candidates are to bring their own instrument for the audition.

    • Dance – International (Hip Hop)
      • Candidates to put up a 1-minute dance item with music, preferably from the competition or performance they had performed previously.
      • Candidates would be expected to learn a simple routine from the Panel and thereafter perform on the spot. 

    • Show Choir
      • Candidates to sing a song item of their choice for the audition, preferably from the competition or performance they had performed previously. They are strongly encouraged to sing with the backing track of the song (commonly known as “minus one”) on audition day.
      • Candidates might be asked to sing only part of the song during the audition.
      • Basic aural and range tests will be administered.
      • Candidates would be expected to learn a simple routine from the Panel and thereafter perform on the spot.   

    • Guitar Ensemble
      • Candidates to play one music piece of their choice for the audition, preferably from the competition or performance they had performed previously.
      • Candidates to email the following to the Teacher-in-charge (ng_puay_san_christina@moe.edu.sg):
        • the music track of their choice at least 3 days in advance,
        • indicate the type of performance and the duration (e.g. solo strum and sing, 5 minutes).
      • Candidates might be asked to play only part of the prepared piece during the audition.
      • Sight-reading exercises will be administered.
      • Candidates are to prepare their own guitar for the audition.

    • Visual Arts
      • Submit portfolio by email to Teacher-in-charge (ng_puay_san_christina@moe.edu.sg).
      • To submit portfolio, latest by 30 July 2022. Portfolio to consist of a write-up & introduction of your arts ability. Also, to explain the art works submitted, to describe if the works are their achievements or enhancements from other sources.
      • Shortlisted portfolios would be granted an audition which would be held in August 2022. 
      • Candidates would be expected to draw a still-life object given by the Panel during the audition.

Phase 2: Dialogue Session with School Leadership Team


Applicants who are shortlisted from the Interview / Audition in Phase 1 will be invited to attend an in-person Dialogue Session with the School Leadership Team which will  be held in Westwood Secondary School. Applicants will need to be present for the Dialogue Session. The school will only consider re-scheduling the in-person Dialogue Session for applicants who are unwell (e.g. tested COVID-19 positive).

APPLICATION OUTCOME

  • The decision of the DSA-Sec application interview panel is FINAL
  • Westwood Secondary reserves the right not to reveal the reasons for the non-selection of applicants
  • Successful applicants who have accepted the DSA-Sec application are NOT allowed to participate in the 2023 Secondary One Posting Exercise 
  • Successful applicants who have accepted the DSA-Sec application are NOT allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results

Application
Application for DSA-Sec can be submitted through the online DSA-Sec Portal. The application is free-of-charge and will be open from 5 May 2022, 11am to 1 Jun 2022, 3pm. For more details, please refer to MOE DSA website.

Westwood EventsIn view of the COVID-19 situation, to ensure the safety of the students, parents and our staff, the school is unable to organise our DSA Open House.

Results ReleaseAll applicants will be informed of the DSA outcome by 12 September 2022


Parents and students are strongly encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student's aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools' academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent. 

Students who are successfully admitted to the school via DSA are expected to honour their commitment to the school, and participate in the activities related to the talent they are selected for from year 1-4.
